Mashed potatoes, a good food to eat after wisdom tooth extractions

Do you have an upcoming wisdom tooth extraction procedure? Afterward, you will need to make some temporary modifications to your normal routine so you can support your body’s healing process. One important thing you must do is modify your diet. What foods should you eat (and avoid!) as you recover? This blog post provides some helpful guidelines.

Recommended Foods During Recovery

In the initial days after wisdom tooth extractions, your mouth will be sensitive and vulnerable. Eating foods that are soft and easy to swallow is essential because they will not disturb the surgical sites and will help minimize pain.

Here are some examples of foods that should be safe to consume during your recovery:

  • Brothy and clear soups
  • Yogurt
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Applesauce
  • Gelatin-based snacks such as Jell-O
  • Protein shakes or smoothies (ensure there are no seeds or chunks)
  • Oatmeal or cream of wheat
  • Pudding
  • Ice cream without hard add-ins
  • Soft, boneless fish

These foods are gentle on the healing tissues and provide much-needed energy and nutrients without risking irritation or injury.

Foods You Should Avoid

Certain foods can hinder your recovery and may cause additional pain or complications. It is wise to steer clear of anything that could irritate or injure your healing mouth.

Avoid the following:

  • Crunchy or hard foods such as chips, nuts, and raw vegetables
  • Sticky foods like caramel and chewing gum
  • Spicy items that can aggravate sensitive tissues
  • Acidic foods, including citrus fruits and tomatoes
  • Very hot beverages or soups that might disrupt the healing process
  • Caffeinated drinks, including coffee and energy drinks, which can increase bleeding
  • Grains or seeds that might become lodged in extraction sites
  • Alcohol, which can slow down healing and cause dangerous interactions with pain medications

As a general guideline, if a food causes discomfort, it is best to avoid it until your mouth has fully healed.

Transitioning Back to Your Usual Diet

The rate at which people recover can vary. Most individuals are able to start reintroducing more solid foods within one to two weeks of their surgery. Listen to your body, and follow your dentist’s recommendations to ensure a safe transition.

When you feel ready, start with soft, chewable foods such as:

  • Pasta
  • Well-cooked vegetables
  • Meatloaf and other tender meats
  • Soft breads

Add harder foods gradually, and stop if you experience any pain or discomfort. Your primary goal should be to protect the healing sites and ensure that your recovery progresses smoothly.

Your wisdom tooth extractions might require you to temporarily abstain from some of your favorite snacks and meals. Be patient, and before you know it, you should once again be able to chow down on a wide variety of foods.
