What Are Implant Dentures?
Dental implants are titanium pieces designed to be surgically placed in the jawbone so they can support lifelike dental restorations such as dentures. Since titanium has the remarkable ability to fuse with living bone tissue through the natural process of osseointegration, this allows the implants to establish the stable foundation the artificial teeth mounted upon them need to maximize chewing power and last for decades if they receive proper care. After a brief dental exam during your consultation, our dentist may recommend an appliance such as:
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
Sometimes referred to as “hybrid prosthesis,” fixed implant dentures are designed to remain anchored firmly in place unless removed by a qualified dentist. These devices are usually supported by four to six titanium pieces placed at strategic locations in the jawbone for maximum leverage, and the patient will need to have strong enough jawbones to support these devices.
Removable Implant Dentures
Also called “snap-on dentures,” these devices are connected to two to five dental implants using ball sockets that allow them to be removed for hygiene purposes. These devices will need to be taken out and cleaned every day, but they can be excellent solutions for patients with low jawbone density.
The Implant Denture Process
The team at Barker, Rohner and Hunt DMD is trained and equipped to carry out the entire dental implantation process in house so you won’t have to worry about dealing with an outside specialist. This process will consist of four principal stages, those being:
- The consultation: You meet with our dentist so he can determine the best way to replace your lost teeth. If dental implants are the best option for you, we’ll schedule you for any necessary preliminary restorative treatments as well as placement surgery.
- The surgery: After we have resolved any gum disease or dental infections, you’ll be scheduled to have your implants placed. This process is rendered painless with anesthesia, and most patients are able to return to their daily activities the next day.
- Osseointegration: You’ll need to take care of your new implants for several months while they fuse with your jawbone. Once this is complete, you will return to our office to receive the abutment pieces that will connect your restorations to your implants.
- Final restoration: About two weeks after receiving your abutment pieces, you’ll come back to have your restorations attached to your implants. You’ll then be ready to start using your new teeth.
Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?
Most adults with missing teeth who are free from oral infections and healthy enough to receive minor surgery can be excellent candidates for dental implants. During your consultation at our Raleigh office, we’ll be able to determine the best way to restore your smile and preserve your oral health. Before receiving implant dentures, you may have to receive restorative treatments to address oral infections or reinforce your jawbone, and we’ll be happy to refer you to a specialist if necessary.
